Announcing ERCC 2019 Keynote: Dr. Danielle Allen

Campus Compact is pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for the Eastern Region Campus Compact Conference (ERCC) being held March 25-27, 2019 in Providence, Rhode Island will be Dr. Danielle Allen of Harvard University.

Dr. Allen is a compelling analyst of history and contemporary events and a leader in higher education. She is currently Director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University as well as James Bryant Conant University Professor. Before joining Harvard, she was UPS Foundation Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the first African American faculty member to be appointed to the Institute that was Einstein’s home for two decades. She is also a contributing columnist for the Washington Post.

Dr. Allen is the author of six books, including Our Declaration: a reading of the Declaration of Independence in defense of equality, which won the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians and the Chicago Tribune’s Heartland Prize for Nonfiction and CUZ :The Life and Times of Michael A. (2017)

She is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the American Philosophical Society and a 2001 winner of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.

Dr. Allen will kick off the conference, Education for Democracy: Innovating in Complex Times on Monday, March 25, 2019. The conference theme will consider how higher education is influenced by significant social, economic, and political factors within and beyond academe, and campuses are at the nexus of multiple social movements. Through the lens of this theme, ERCC conference participants will explore key topics related to community-engaged scholarship, learning that promotes civic & democratic engagement, and programs and partnerships that enhance both community & campus.
